RM of Excel’s story
The Rural Municipality of Excel No. 71 incorporated as a rural municipality on January 1, 1913. It lies in the south-central part of Saskatchewan, and its office is in Viceroy.
Several communities have grown up within its boundaries. Ormiston is the organized hamlet, while Crane Valley and Maxwellton are localities. Readlyn and Verwood were once villages, dissolved in 1955 and 1954 respectively, and Viceroy, also a former village, was dissolved in 2002.
A short-line railway run by Red Coat & Rail Ltd. passes through the municipality, mainly carrying agricultural products. West of Ormiston, the Dryboro and Burn Lake area in the Missouri Coteau is recognized as an Important Bird Area. Its intermittent salt lakes are important habitat for the endangered piping plover, and the lakes are protected from development up to the high water mark.
